Andrew Albicy (after France's victory against Croatia): “In defense we cannot cheat”
Andrew Albicy (captain of the French national team, Croatia wins qualification for Euro 2025): “It wasn’t an easy game. We had ups and downs, but the main thing is that we did the job, with a good average of points (73-61). We know that on the wickets, with little time to work, there is less fluidity in attack. But in defense you can’t cheat. If we want to become a major nation again, we must defend. We made the effort, we put the right intensity and although there were things to correct, in general we did a good job. »
“We saw consistent defense and that’s satisfying.”
Vincent Collet (Blues coach): “These first matches are always delicate, more surprising than a normal match, because we have no reference points, everyone can try new systems. But from one game to the next, experience shows us that we see an improvement in offensive behavior. Therefore, while we wait for things to fall into place, we must defend. In attack, this afternoon we lacked rhythm, collective speed, we kept the ball set too much. But we saw consistent defense and that is satisfactory. It is easier to implement in a short time, compared to the attack, but it still has to be done. Commitment was the leitmotif. These games should be the launching pad for this summer and that starts with finding a conquering defense. Defense is what allows you to be average on the other side. »
Matthew Strazel (leader of the French team, 12 points for his first selection): “I was a little apprehensive. He wanted the team to play well when I was on the field. I hope I achieved it, that was the most important thing, beyond individual performance. When I took my first shot, he gave me confidence. The most moving moment was the Marseillaise. It was the first time I sang it with the A team and it is a moment that will stay with me for a long time.
